He was instructed by President Emilio Aguinaldo to make a tune for the anthem of the new Republic.<br /> <br /> Aguinaldo liked the tune, so did the many people who celebrated their independence near the balcony of Aguinaldo's house. It was the "Philippine National March."<br /> <br /> During the American Occupation, the anthem was sung in English.<br /> <br /> But years later after independence, during President Ramon Magsaysay's administration, he instructed a commission to translate it into Filipino. It was successful.
